Fifteen years ago, I was 50 pounds overweight, a pack-a-day smoker, and in constant pain. My turning point came after a severe knee injury that left me unable to bear weight and in need of surgery. Post-surgery, I was told I would never squat again and would need pain meds and injections for the rest of my life.
Then, my father had a heart attack, which was a wake-up call for me. I knew I had to change my lifestyle. I quit smoking, changed my diet, and started exercising. My journey began with small steps, like standing up from a chair without assistance. Gradually, I built up my strength and lost 50 pounds. I felt amazing, both physically and mentally.
Despite minor knee pain, I set a new goal: to deadlift 315 lbs. I achieved that goal through dedication and hard work and continued to progress. However, my journey wasn't without setbacks. I was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner syndrome, which caused severe muscle weakness. I regained my strength with time, physical therapy, and focused training.
Today, I am proud to say that I am pain-free and have achieved impressive strength milestones, including deadlifting 485 lbs, despite the arthritis in my knee. But more importantly, my quality of life has improved dramatically.
About a year ago, my wife, a dedicated yoga practitioner and instructor for nearly 20 years, began experiencing debilitating shoulder pain that prevented her from performing even a simple push-up. After several visits to a physical therapist, she was diagnosed with Swimmer’s Sholder.
Determined to help her regain her strength, we began working together. In just two months, she achieved remarkable progress. Not only is she doing push-ups again, but she’s also squatting, rowing, and deadlifting and is well on her way to performing a pull-up. She quickly found her strength by focusing on mobility, core activation, and resistance training. Her yoga practice, running, and everyday life showed improvements.
